Gloria
Gloria is a 58-year-old divorcée. Her children have all left home but she has no desire to spend her days and nights alone. Determined to defy old age and loneliness, she rushes headlong into a whirl of singles’ parties on the hunt for instant gratification – which only leads to repeated disappointment and enduring emptiness. But when Gloria meets Rodolfo, an ex-naval officer seven years her senior, she begins to imagine the possibility of a permanent relationship.

Presented by Letters and NumbersThe next chapter in the Latin American cinema series features a screening of Gloria (2013) by Chilean director Sebastián Lelio — the original film that inspired his later US remake, Gloria Bell. Gloria is 58, divorced, and starting to frequent singles discos. When she meets Rodolfo, she begins a relationship that tests her sense of self. With warmth and humor, the film explores what it means to seek happiness and live fully at any age. After the movie, we’ll gather to share impressions and discuss the film with Arevik, a Hispanic culture enthusiast and teacher of Spanish and English.
