Yury Bykov's film "The Master" (Khozyain)—screened at Berlin and Geneva film festivals in 2023 and unreleased in Russia—is one of the director's most mature and complete works. Cinematographer Mikhail Solovyov crafts the grim atmosphere of provincial Russia, where untouched wilderness contrasts with moral decay, and Karelia's snow-covered forests and frozen lakes mirror the cold settling into the characters' souls.
