Theatrum Kircherianum
Next from Armenian State PhilharmoniaMusic of Hans Zimmer by Mystery EnsembleSat, Oct 24 · 17:00An ecstatic voyage through Baroque skies. Athanasius Kircher, a German-born Jesuit priest who spent most of his life in Rome, was once known as "the last man who knew everything." With his characteristic eclectic and syncretic approach, he studied angelology and volcanology, acoustics and Egyptian hieroglyphs, magnetism and Chinese culture. Moreover, it was Kircher who coined the term phonosophia—knowledge through sound. He is the concentrated embodiment of his era, the Baroque. But above all, he was a seeker of wonders. His books, full of imagination and imagery, fascinated surrealists and Umberto Eco centuries later. This performative mise-en-scène is inspired by Kircher's only fictional work, ITER EXTATICUM ("Ecstatic Journey," 1656). The protagonist, Kircher himself, appearing under the name Theodidactus (God-taught), falls into an ecstatic sleep during a chamber music concert. The angel Cosmiel appears to him and, like Beatrice to Dante, guides him through the celestial spheres, showing him the order of the universe and the harmony of heavenly sounds. Theodidactus, in turn, tells Cosmiel about the Baroque. Astrea, another mysterious being, performs the "dance of the planets." A musical journey that is simultaneously a meditation on that strange thing called "Baroque." Sound and Conception: Theatrum Phonosophicum Theodidactus: Leopoldo Siano Cosmiel: Shushan Hyusnunts Astrea: Hasmik Tangyan (dance) Admission is free
