What makes a diva? Who gets to become one, and what happens when we queer her? Building a Diva is a participatory workshop exploring the relationship between pop culture, queerness, identity, and performance through the figure of the diva, led by Berlin-based multidisciplinary artist and DJ Hassandra. Taking Arab and Armenian pop divas as a starting point, we will look at how artists have shaped our ideas of femininity, glamour, desire, power, and belonging. Through conversations, photo archives, music videos, interviews, and visual collages, participants will explore their own relationships to pop icons and the cultural memories attached to them. You will create your own photo and video collages, bringing together images, sounds, memories, references, and fantasies to construct a personal diva. No previous artistic experience is required.
